Snow, ice, freezing rain and cold temperatures are all too familiar if you’ve spent even one winter in the Twin Cities. More than any other season, winter is the time when you really appreciate a nice, cozy home. If an ailing furnace is keeping you — or threatening to keep you — from having the warmth you need, replacing it doesn’t have be as budget-busting as you might think. By keeping some things in mind, you can save money.
How a Typical Furnace Works
Your thermostat senses when it’s time to warm your home. Once it reads that your house needs heat, it sends a message to the furnace to kick on. Your furnace warms the cold air flowing into it and then distributes the warm air into the ductwork that leads to the various rooms in your home.
Ways to Lower Your Purchase and Operating Costs
- Select a furnace that will save you money in the long run. Today, you can choose from many standard- and high-efficiency models. The less overall energy the furnace uses, the more money you will save in the long run. If possible, go with a furnace that has a high AFUE rating.
- Choose a furnace that fits your home. Most furnaces installed before 1980 were too large for the homes they heated. Work with your heating contractor to ensure that the furnace you’re putting in your home is correctly sized. To optimize your savings, try to lower your heating load before you buy your furnace. Locate and seal air leaks and insulate wherever you can. Energy-efficient windows can also go a long way toward lowering your heating load. Any of these projects might allow you to buy a smaller and less expensive unit.
- Have your ductwork cleaned before you install your new furnace, and have it cleaned regularly from now on. Clean ductwork will deliver your warm air more efficiently and keep particulate matter in the air minimal.
