Tired of allergies and frequent sick days? Your home’s indoor air quality may be at least partly to blame. According to experts, the impurities in our indoor air are a contributing factor in half of all allergies or illnesses. That is why a whole-house air purification system is so valuable.
A whole-house air purification system is an air cleaner that is incorporated into your HVAC system. Air cleaners ty
pically include a filter of some kind that removes unseen particles from the air; they may also use an electric charge or UV light to kill disease-carrying germs or other microorganisms. The best, most effective air purification systems combine both a filter and a germ-killing element to leave you with the cleanest air possible.
You may have seen small, portable air cleaners in a store or on TV. These might help clean the air somewhat, but they are nowhere near as effective as a whole-house air purification system, for several reasons:
- An air purifier can only clean the air that passes through it. A small, portable air purifier does not move nearly as much air as your HVAC system, which is what pushes the air through a whole-house system. In fact, all the air in your house can pass through a whole-house purifier several times per day, becoming cleaner with each pass.
- The air in your house does not circulate between rooms all that much on its own. An in-room air purifier might clean the air in that one room, but will not do much for the rest of the house. Since your HVAC system is what provides air to every room of your house, a whole-house air purifier provides clean air to every room.
- Some portable air cleaners produce ozone, which they claim cleans the air. Ozone, however, is an air pollutant itself and can irritate your lungs.
