If you plan on upgrading your air conditioner this summer, two of the most important factors to consider are its size and installation. Many people don’t know that sizing an air conditioner is not as simple as going by their current system and that installation may require modifications to your home.
Sizing
Most HVAC contractors use a protocol called Manual J to properly size the air conditioner for your home. Weatherization improvements to your home over the years may have reduced the size you need since the last one was installed, plus the newer models provide more and better cooling in a smaller package. The components of Manual J and sizing include:
- Cubic footage of the space you want to condition;
- Insulation levels;
- Air infiltration levels;
- Windows, their energy efficiency and exposure to sunshine;
- Heat-producing appliance, including lighting types;
- Number of home occupants;
- Temperature preferences, and
- Lifestyle factors.
Choosing a system that’s too big does not give you as much comfort because these A/Cs tend to cycle on and off frequently, leaving more humidity in the air. The frequent on-and-off cycling also wears the parts faster and raises your electric bill. A system that’s too small won’t cool effectively, and will have to overwork itself to meet your temperature demands.
Installation
Installation when upgrading your air conditioner makes a difference, especially if you need additional ducts or improvements to the existing ductwork system. The installation team finds the best location for the outdoor condenser/compressor, away from landscaping or other obstructions. They also have to install the refrigerant to the precise level that the manufacturer recommends.
In order for your warranty to stay valid, the manufacturer of your new air conditioner typically requires specific maintenance tasks performed at regular intervals by a licensed technician. During the installation process, the technical team should explain your system and what you can do to keep it running most efficiently.
