If you’re striving for better indoor air quality, there are 10 easy steps that will help you achieve that goal. By implementing these, you will be helping to protect the health and comfort of both you and your family.
- 1. If you are using potentially volatile chemicals indoors – for things like home cleaning or painting –
be sure to do so in a well-ventilated area with windows open. - 2. Store volatile compounds away from your home to eliminate the risk of their chemicals getting into ventilation air intakes. This includes items like paint thinner, pesticides and solvents.
- 3. Implement UV lights in your air system. These highly effective germicidal tools can be used to complement your air filters. They use low levels of UV radiation to immediately kill off dangerous microorganisms in your air such as bacteria, mold and viruses.
- 4. Replace your air filters on a consistent basis. This keeps them capturing pollutants from your air at their most efficient rate. It also prevents a buildup of debris on the filter that makes your air system overwork to compensate, driving your energy costs up.
- 5. Be sure that the vents from your central vacuum system and dryer deposit air outside of your house.
- 6. Replace any fans in your kitchen or bathrooms if they do not deposit air directly outdoors. If they do not, they are simply allowing pollutants to recirculate throughout your house.
- 7. Ensure that your heating equipment is venting outside.
- 8. Reduce you use of unvented combustion sources indoors such as vent-free heaters, candles, cigarettes and indoor barbecues.
- 9. Don’t locate major HVAC components such as air conditioners or ductwork in areas that would easily allow them to draw in contaminants. This includes the garage. If this cannot be avoided, make sure you seal up these areas as well as you can using materials such as weather-stripping.
- 10. Properly vent secondary heating sources such as fireplaces.
