Although winter has been unseasonably mild in the Twin Cities this year, your heating bills may still be substantial. When you’re looking for ways to save energy dollars, lowering your heating and cooling load by improving the efficiency of your HVAC equipment makes sense. Here are some steps to consider:
- Have your heating and cooling equipment inspected by an HVAC technician at least once a year. He will bring your system back to factory specifications as much as possible. When the working parts of your equipment are clean and tuned up, they run much more efficiently, which saves energy.

- Keep your air filters clean. Nothing interferes with the efficiency of cooling or heating as much as dirty filters. While annual tune-ups save energy dollars, the filters need attention when the furnace or air conditioner is working hard.
- Note any problems with exceptionally cold or hot rooms. This could be caused by faulty ductwork. Even new homes can have leaky or restricted ducts. If your ducts are hard to reach, an HVAC technician can check them for you and make any repairs to lower your conditioning costs.
- Insulate your ductwork. You may be able to do this job yourself. If not, hire a professional.
- Use a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat conserves your energy dollars by automatically lowering or raising the temperature at times when you don’t need as much heating or cooling. For example, during heating season, you can set your thermostat to go down when you go to work or to bed at night and to rise again shortly before you get up in the morning or return home from work.
