You may have heard someone complain about an experience with an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) contractor that was less than positive. Perhaps the technician was unable to diagnose a problem properly the first time he visited, or perhaps the technician had to return several times before being able to fix the problem. You may even have heard of technicians installing used parts when making repairs, but still charging the customer the price of new parts.
If you’ve heard any of these horror stories, you may be understandably nervous about selecting an HVAC professional. One way to tell the best from the rest is to check out whether your potential contractor has NATE-certified technicians.
NATE, also known as the North American Technician Excellence organization, tests and certifies HVAC technicians through a process well respected in the industry and by government agencies. The non-profit group conducts exams that include a core test that assesses a technician’s overall knowledge of tools, safety and basic electrical concepts, as well as science and construction.
Technicians also must pass additional exams in at least one area of specialty, such as air conditioning, hydronics, commercial refrigeration, heating or heat pumps, or air distribution. These specialized tests determine whether the technician has the expertise and skill required to install and service equipment and parts related to that specialty.
The thoroughness and effectiveness of NATE testing and training show forth in the results. The organization proudly declares that NATE-certified technicians receive nearly 13 percent fewer callbacks than uncertified techs. Customers also take note of the integrity they find in NATE repairmen, who exhibit higher degrees of knowledge of HVAC repair and maintenance, work at faster rates and with more competency than their counterparts.
