Your HVAC system is a major investment for your home and a complex collection of equipment. Whether you are having routine maintenance done, installing a new component or undergoing a major system overhaul, hiring someone to do work on your HVAC system can be a stressful process. This is especially true if you aren’t sure what to look for. Fortunately, hiring a good HVAC contractor doesn’t have to be difficult if you follow a few simple tips.
- Learn your local rules. HVAC contractors generally have to be licensed, insured and bonded. This means they have shown at least a minimum level of competence to earn a license and they have been issued a bond, or a form of insurance that will pay claims made by homeowners in the event that a complaint is made against a contractor that he ca
n’t or won’t pay. Insured typically means the contractor has worker’s compensation insurance so if he is injured on your property, he won’t be suing you. All of these things are very important to protect your financial interests. - Ask for referrals and read online reviews. The best way to find a contractor is to use someone that has already done work for someone you trust. If you don’t know anyone who has used an HVAC contractor, there are plenty of places you can turn to online to read reviews and recommendations from other people in your area. Just be careful to make sure the reviews are legitimate by watching for anything that sounds too good to be true.
- Contact references. A reliable contractor won’t be afraid to give you the names of past customers that you can talk to about his work and service.
- Get everything in writing. Any contractor you are considering should give you a detailed written estimate of work to be performed and estimated costs and prices. When you hire a contractor, he or she should also be willing to give you a detailed contract outlining the work to be performed.
