If you’re looking to upgrade to more energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment and products in your Twin Cities area home, you may be able to save some money on your purchases through energy efficiency rebates offered by various gas providers.
For example, Minnesota Energy Resources, which provides natural gas services in 51 counties and 165 cities in Minnesota, offers rebates on energy-efficient natural gas equipment that meets certain energy-efficiency criteria.
A high-efficiency natural gas furnace with a minimum 92 percent annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) can qualify for a rebate of $250 from Minnesota Energy Resources, while a furnace with a minimum 95 percent AFUE nets $350. Minnesota Energy Resources recommends that homeowners work with a professional HVAC contractor to determine the best system for their home.
CenterPoint Energy’s program provides rebates of up to $500 to Minnesota homeowners who upgrade or replace their furnace or boiler with a high-efficiency model.
Xcel Energy, which also operates in the Twin Cities area, offers efficiency rebates for furnaces between $100 and $250, depending on their AFUE percentages. The rebates start at $100 for 90 percent AFUE furnaces, and continue rising with the AFUE ratings. For boiler, the rebates are $100 for 84 percent and above AFUE. These are all figures for existing homes.
Think of a rebate for energy-efficient equipment as a reward for saving energy and a bonus on top of the savings you’re going to see on your energy bills when using the equipment. It takes very little effort to apply for a rebate, but you can get a nice payoff.
