Some homeowners make the mistake of assuming they can place an air purifier just about anywhere, turn it on, and then forget about it. But it’s not so simple if you want your air purifier to perform the way it’s intended to. Here are five air purifier placement techniques that will maximize your device’s air-cleaning ability:
- Whole-house placement. As the phrase suggests, this is for an air purifier that’s intended to clean the air throughout your house. It should be positioned near the air intake for the central A/C system, taking advantage of the n
ear-constant flow of air and distribution via the duct system. During heating season, avoid positioning the air purifier near the air intake for the furnace. Rather, place it in your home’s central area. - Placement in the corner. This is a good spot for a purifier that’s not expected to clean the air throughout your home. In an out-of-the-way corner, this device can still remove airborne contaminants without creating an unsafe and unattractive obstruction for people walking through your room.
- Behind the couch. This is an effective placement if you allow smoking indoors. If people are smoking cigarettes on the couch, an air purifier installed discreetly behind your sofa or couch can more easily clean the air of tobacco smoke. Place it as close as possible to the ashtray.
- Close to a doorway. In most homes, air moves from room to room and from indoor and outdoor environments. If you’re concerned about pollutants entering a room through a doorway, place an air purifier near the door.
- Kitchen or bathroom placement. A variety of odors and fumes are generated in the kitchen and bathroom, which makes these ideal places to add an air purifier. A purifier operating with an ultraviolet (UV) lamp and high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) filter can remove bacteria and other contaminants, along with neutralizing unwanted odors.
