Most people familiar with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry know about NATE certification. As a consumer, hiring a technician with North American Technician Excellence (NATE) training and certification means you’re getting the best in the business. Here’s why NATE certification should be a top priority when choosing an HVAC contractor.
What is NATE?
North American Technician Excellence was founded in 1997. It’s the only non-profit organization to be owned, operated and supported by the HVAC industry.
In regards to choosing an HVAC contractor, Consumer Reports has said, “It’s a plus if technicians are certified by NATE.” According to surveys conducted by NATE, consumers are 24 percent more likely to be satisfied with a job well done after choosing a contactor with NATE certification compared to a non-NATE-certified tech.
Requirements to become NATE-certified
Technicians must prove their knowledge of rigorous core competencies by completing training and taking a core exam as well as a specialty exam that proves their knowledge. The competencies included in NATE certification tests were put together by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and other HVAC organizations.
Prior to testing, NATE recommends one to five years of experience in order to pass the strenuous training and testing process. Technicians with NATE certification are more likely to be hired by HVAC companies because they’ve proven their industry knowledge and capabilities.
Benefits of NATE certification
By choosing a NATE-certified tech over the other guy (or gal), you’ll enjoy:
- Lower utility bills thanks to correct installation and optimal maintenance techniques
- Fewer call-backs because NATE technicians get the job done right the first time
- Faster, more efficient service
- Better performance from HVAC equipment that runs at peak efficiency
- Advice from skilled technicians with NATE certification
- Greater peace of mind
While several certification programs exist within the HVAC industry, NATE is the only one that’s fully endorsed across the board. For a technician who knows his stuff, don’t settle for anything less than NATE certification.
