Interviewing an HVAC Contractor: There’s an Art to It

If you need to install or repair the HVAC system in your Twin Cities area home, you’ll need a skilled and trustworthy HVAC contractor. To find the right expert for your home, you will likely want to interview some contractors and HVAC businesses in your area. At times, it can seem like comparing oranges and apples, so how can you choose the right one? There are a few questions you will want to ask during the initial interview:

1. Can they provide proof of insurance, state licenses and other credentials? A qualified contractor should have adequate insurance and should be licensed by the state. A professional may also be part of national or state contractor associations, and any technicians who work in your home should be NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certified.
2. What options do they think will work in your home? Look for an HVAC contractor who takes a look at your home and offers solutions specific to your space. In addition, look for a professional who is willing to explain and offer different options (such as different levels of efficiency ratings – e.g., SEER ) in different price ranges.
3. What staff will be working in your home and what are their qualifications? Everyone who works in your home should be licensed for their job and fully insured. The HVAC company should also have enough staff to handle the job.
4. May you see a copy of the contract? Any contract you sign with an HVAC contractor should be transparent and should guarantee that all work is done to industry standards. Any warranties should be clearly outlined and should protect you. Make sure you understand what is covered by any warranties. Make sure that you also get a written estimate.
5. What brands do they work with? Look for a contractor who can offer you quality brands of air conditioners, heating systems and other HVAC components.
