If you own a home in the Twin Cities area and you’re considering an upgrade of your home’s HVAC system, you can receive thousands of dollars in savings with the Federal tax credits for energy efficiency. But don’t delay because these tax credits expire on Dec. 31, 2011.
The Federal government is offering tax incentives for homeowners to convert to green energy systems, such as solar, wind and heat pumps. Here’s how the tax credits add up:
- Receive up to $500 in Federal HVAC credit (25C) when you purchase a qualifying, energy efficient air conditioner or heat pump plus furnace. This credit applies in the year 2011 only, must be for an existing home and your principal residence. New construction and rental properties do not qualify.
- Receive up to $200 for the Energy Star window tax credit.
- Receive up to $300 for the water heater tax credit
- Receive up to $500 for the insulation, doors and roof credits
- Receive a Federal Solar tax credit (25D) of 30% of the cost of a solar or wind energy system, geothermal heat pumps, and fuel cells for your primary residence or second home. Rentals do not qualify. There is no upper limit on the cost of these systems for the tax credit to be applied. This credit applies for systems purchased until Dec. 31, 2016.
- Receive an additional Federal Solar tax credit (25D) of 9% of the cost of a solar-ready air conditioner or heat pump system purchased by Dec. 31, 2016.
