What to Do If Your Furnace Stops Working During a Winter Storm
A Minnesota winter storm can be beautiful—but it’s also brutally cold. And the last thing any homeowner wants is to have their furnace go out when snow is piling up and the temperatures are plummeting.
If your furnace suddenly stops working during a winter storm, don’t panic. Follow these steps to troubleshoot the problem, keep your family safe, and know when to call in the professionals.
Step 1: Check the Thermostat
It sounds simple, but always start with your thermostat.
✅ Make sure it’s set to “heat” and the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature.
✅ Replace the batteries, especially if your thermostat screen is blank or flickering.
✅ Check the circuit breaker that powers the thermostat and furnace—flip it off and on again to reset if needed.
Smart thermostats, like the Lennox iComfort® line, may provide error messages or notifications that can help you diagnose the issue.
Step 2: Inspect the Furnace Switch and Breaker
Most furnaces have a dedicated power switch nearby (it may look like a light switch). Make sure it hasn’t been accidentally flipped off.
🔌 Also check the main breaker panel to ensure the furnace circuit hasn’t tripped. If it has, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, call a professional—there may be a short or other electrical issue.
Step 3: Check the Furnace Filter
A clogged air filter is one of the most common (and preventable) reasons a furnace stops working. Dirty filters restrict airflow, causing the system to overheat and shut down as a safety precaution.
🧼 Replace the filter, even if it doesn’t look too bad. Furnaces should have filters changed at least every 1–3 months—more often if you have pets or allergies.
Step 4: Inspect the Vents and Exhaust Pipes
Blocked air vents or a clogged exhaust pipe can cause your furnace to shut off to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
🌨️ Go outside and check the vent/exhaust outlet—it’s often located on the side of the house. Snow or ice buildup could be the problem. Gently clear the obstruction, but never pour hot water on frozen pipes.
Inside, ensure that air supply and return vents are open and unobstructed by furniture or rugs.
Step 5: Try a Furnace Reset
If your furnace is still unresponsive, locate the reset button on your unit. This is usually a small red or yellow button. Press it once and wait a few minutes.
⚠️ Only press the reset once. If the furnace doesn’t restart or shuts off again soon after, it’s time to call in the pros.
Step 6: Keep Warm While You Wait
If your troubleshooting doesn’t work, call Marsh Heating & Air Conditioning for emergency furnace service—but in the meantime, stay warm and safe:
🧤 Layer up: Wear thermal clothing, hats, and socks.
🪟 Seal off unused rooms to concentrate warmth.
🕯️ Use alternative heat sources safely: If using space heaters or a fireplace, follow all safety guidelines and never leave them unattended.
🚫 Avoid using your oven or stovetop for heat, as this is dangerous and can cause carbon monoxide buildup.
