Furnace filters trap dust and other airborne contaminants to keep your air clean and healthy. Particulates in the air can also have a tremendous impact on the effectiveness of your heating system. As a result, it’s recommended that you change your filter at least once every three months. Here are some reasons why changing your HVAC air filter regularly is so important:
It Prevents Damage to Your Heating System
Particulates in the air can damage your fan and your heating coil. HVAC filters can keep these particles from getting into your system. However, they must be changed regularly to provide any benefits. Changing your filters regularly can prevent system failure, making it more efficient and saving you the cost of repairing or replacing the unit.
Improve Your Indoor Air Quality
There are many different types of filters, ranging from basic ones that remove larger particles to those that trap extremely fine particles. Filters are rated according to their Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). An HVAC air filter that has a high MERV rating can remove contaminants like mold, bacteria and pollen from the air. This can also improve the air quality inside your home.
Lower Your Energy Costs
Your heating system will have to work harder to pull air through a clogged filter, which means is will use more energy. Regularly changing your filter can help your system work much more efficiently, lowering your energy costs.
