Keeping your home’s climate-control system running smoothly is easy, as long as you schedule and perform seasonal HVAC maintenance. Here are just a few of the things an HVAC technician can do when the seasons change to keep your air conditioner, heat pump or furnace operating at peak efficiency. This will save you money and extend equipment service life. In the spring, your maintenance attention should be focused on cooling equipment, whether it’s your A/C, furnace or heat pump.
Checking Over Your A/C, furnace or Heat Pump
There are two main components of a split-system air conditioner or heat pump: the outside condenser/compressor unit and the inside evaporator/air handler. In order for your air conditioner to work as efficiently as possible, the compressor and other components should be in good working order. These include:
- Motors
- Wiring
- Refrigerant coils and lines
Making sure each of these components is functioning normally will usually mean that you shouldn’t have any trouble with your air conditioner during the cooling season. Problems are best caught early, before they result in breakdowns in the middle of a hot day. In addition, seasonal maintenance includes checking the refrigerant level and charging it properly if that’s necessary, plus looking for leaks if the coolant is low. Things you can do include regularly inspecting the system air filter, and changing it when it’s dirty, keeping yard debris and other objects away from the outside unit, and making sure the indoor and outdoor coils are kept clean.
Maintaining Your Heating System
In the fall, your HVAC technician can go over every major part of your furnace to make sure it’s working properly. Your burners and ignition system will be completely checked out, along with checking for leaks around the perimeter of the furnace. The electrical system, including the blower motor and the wiring between your furnace and the thermostat, will also be checked for loose connections.
