When hiring an HVAC contractor, you’ll want to know a few things before moving forward. While requesting references, checking certifications and gathering quotes are obvious questions for your contractor, there are a few less obvious things you’ll want to know, such as the bond requirements that Minnesota HVAC contractors must follow.
The Minnesota State Building Code, which governs the installation and maintenance of heating and cooling systems,
requires HVAC contractors, like all mechanical contractors, to file a mechanical contractor bond with the Department of Labor & Industry (DLI). These regulations apply to any contractor working with:
- Heating
- Gas
- Ventilation
- Cooling
- Air conditioning
- Fuel burning
- Refrigeration work
When looking for an HVAC contractor, make sure that their bond has been properly filed with the DLI, in addition to checking local licensing requirements. While the state of Minnesota does not issue HVAC contractors a state license, a bond must be filed and approved by the DLI in order for an HVAC contractor to legally do business in the state. You can search for bonded HVAC contractors on the DLI website.
