Most Minnesota homeowners are probably aware that a high-quality HVAC filter will help keep their indoor air clean, but they may not be aware that it can also save them money. When dust, dirt and other particles build up on a home’s air filter, they force the heating and cooling system to work harder, which can lead to breakdowns and malfunctioning down the line. Higher-quality filters basically make your equipment’s work a lot easier, which translates into better home comfort, lower energy bills and longer service life.
A homeowner can determine a filter’s quality by checking its MERV, which stands for Minimum Efficiency Rating Value. MERV ranges from 1 to 16. The higher the number, the smaller (and more) airborne particulates it will capture. While higher efficiency does a better job, obviously, a homeowner probably shouldn’t go out and purchase the highest rating possible. This is because higher MERV filters – 13 and above – are likely to impede system airflow, unless equipment modifications are made. A HVAC professional can advise you on what efficiency level is most appropriate for a particular forced-air heating and cooling system.
High MERV filters cost a bit more, though their savings in energy costs, system maintenance and improved comfort more than make up for any price difference. Again, the key is to find a filter efficiency that will clean your indoor air without impeding system airflow.
