If you’re new to the area, or have recently transitioned from renter to buyer, it’s important to find a reputable HVAC contractor you can trust. The process of hiring an HVAC contractor goes more smoothly when you know what questions to ask.
Here is a short list of questions that can help you determine the best contractor for your needs, as well as who has the most prompt and friendly customer service.
- Are you licensed? In most cases, HVAC contractors will have their license right on a business card, their website, or a phone book advertisement. If not, they should be able to provide one. You should always verify the license to make sure
it is valid/current.
- How long have you been in business under the same name? This industry has a high turnover rate. Only experience, reliability and excellent service keep companies in business over the long haul. Ideally, you should hire an HVAC company with 10 years of experience, or more, under the same business name.
- What type of certification(s) do you require of your technicians? Certifications ensure technicians are continually educated and trained in the newest industry advancements. North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is a non-profit, third-party, certification organization. NATE-certified technicians must pass a series of knowledge-based, rigorous tests in order to qualify for the NATE logo.
- Do you use Manual J to perform load calculations? Prior to the mid-1990s, many HVAC contractors used rule-of-thumb calculations when sizing an HVAC system for a new home or replacement. This resulted in serious energy inefficiencies in installed equipment. When you’re hiring an HVAC contractor, make sure to select one who does calculations by the book.
- Can you provide three references? When you’re hiring an HVAC contractor, take the time to call or email references. If you let the prospective contractor know the type of home/system you own, they can put you in contact with similar clients so you can hear detailed accounts of their experiences, maintenance pricing, etc.
